Fieldcraft for Wildlife Photography -
In an engaging presentation, Kevin Sawford shared his expertise in wildlife photography, offering invaluable tips, tricks, and fieldcraft techniques.
The talk began with a focus on flower photography, where Kevin highlighted the importance of composition, background, and experimentation. By varying approaches—such as switching between landscape and portrait orientations or adjusting the subject’s size in the frame—he demonstrated how small changes can eliminate distractions and improve results.
Kevin then transitioned to insect photography, showcasing his method of setting up a tripod near flowers and waiting for insects to arrive. He emphasized the value of burst mode to capture fleeting moments and discussed the challenges of photographing insects in flight. For these dynamic shots, he relies on manual focus and precise panning to overcome autofocus limitations.
Moving on to birds, Kevin shared strategies for capturing stunning images in both garden and wild settings. In gardens, he uses feeders and natural props like branches to encourage perching, often baiting them subtly to create ideal compositions. For wild birds, he advised positioning yourself upwind, as birds typically take off and land into the wind, ensuring a front-facing perspective.
Kevin also discussed techniques for photographing larger mammals such as deer and foxes. He underscored the importance of understanding animal behavior, identifying tracks, and setting up in strategic locations. During the rutting season, deer are easier to find, but patience and knowledge of habits are crucial at other times. Kevin recommended avoiding burst mode to minimize disturbance, instead capturing a few deliberate shots.
The talk concluded with insights into photographing brown hares. While typically elusive, the hares on Havergate Island in Suffolk are more accustomed to humans, offering unique opportunities. Elsewhere, Kevin employs a patient approach, combining research, strategic setup, and careful shooting to achieve remarkable results.
Kevin’s talk was a masterclass in blending technical skill with a deep understanding of wildlife, inspiring photographers to elevate their craft.
